The Shoals Welcomes National Alabama
Corporation
Company Announces It Will Build
$350 Million Facility, Employ 1,800 |
The Shoals
opened its arms on Wednesday, July 18, 2007, to welcome National
Alabama Corporation, which announced that it will build a mile-long
facility to manufacture railcars in the Barton Riverfront
Industrial Park. In a public ceremony at the Marriott Shoals
Conference
Center,
a large and enthusiastic crowd turned out to hear the great news.
Loud and sustained applause followed when Alabama Governor Bob Riley
asked The Shoals to welcome "our new neighbor" to the area.
Greg Aziz, chairman and CEO of National Alabama
Corporation, spoke highly of the efforts of Governor Riley and his
economic development team to recruit the company to Alabama.
Mr. Aziz detailed the arduous site selection process that whittled
the number of sites under consideration from 150 down to just
two--one in The Shoals, the other in Mississippi. Ultimately,
The Shoals and Alabama were selected as the new "sweet home" for the
railcar company.
"Of critical importance is a welcoming community of
people who are motivated and want to become a significant partner
with our organization," said Mr. Aziz. "Let me congratulate
everyone involved at both the local and state levels. I
particularly would like to acknowledge the teams from the economic
development offices and related agencies, who handled the myriad of
details, delays, and decisions which are part of an effort of this
magnitude. Governor Riley, a special thank you to you and the
elected officials at the state and local levels who embraced our
dream and created the climate where a winning situation for all was
delivered. In the end, our decision was an easy one. We
are proud to be bringing National Alabama to this sweet home."
U.S. Congressman Bud Cramer spoke to the crowd about
the magnitude of this announcement. He said, "I've been
representing you for 18 years in the United States Congress.
This is as good as it gets." He spoke of the efforts of not
only the last year, but the past several years, as being critical to
the cooperation needed to succeed in landing this project.
Dr. David Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of
Alabama, also congratulated The Shoals for working together so well
on this project. "The way you've worked together for this
project is unique. You've done it."
Local leaders from The Shoals also took the opportunity
to address their friends and neighbors gathered on this historic
day. Senator Bobby Denton spoke of the teamwork involved on
this project and looked forward to The Shoals continuing "the roll
that we've been on." He was followed by Dr. Humphrey Lee,
chairman of the Shoals Chamber of Commerce, who spoke of the
willingness of the community to "work together for a common goal." Finally, Macke Mauldin, chairman of the SEDA
Board of Directors, took the opportunity to thank all of the state
and local government officials and economic development
professionals for working so hard to make this project a success.
He said that "there is no limit" to what we can do if we work
together.
Truly, this was a big day for The Shoals. The
entire community thanks everyone who had a share in working to bring
this project to our area. We now look forward to working
together with National Alabama Corporation to grow and see ever
greater success in the years to come.
