SEDA Welcomes New Board Members |
The Shoals
Economic Development Authority welcomes four new members to serve on
its Board of Directors: Hermon Graham; Harold Lewis; Alex
Nelson, Jr.; and, David Thorn. The addition of these new
appointments brings the SEDA Board to 24 members.
Hermon Graham was appointed by the City of Florence to serve on the
Board until September 30, 2008. Mr. Graham
represents District 3 on the
Florence City Council following his
election in 2004.
He
had previously served on the Council from 1984 to 1992. He has
deep roots in The Shoals, having grown up in
Florence. He graduated from Coffee High School (1962),
attended Northwest Alabama Junior College, attended the University of
North Alabama and served in the U.S. Navy. Since his
retirement from AT&T/Lucient Technologies in 1993, Mr. Graham
has been active in insurance sales. He looks forward "to bringing more good-paying jobs
for our citizens" by
actively recruiting industry and business.
Harold Lewis was appointed by Lauderdale County to serve on the
Board until September 30, 2009. Mr. Lewis is president and owner of
H.W. Lewis' Hobart Sales & Service and
president and owner of Ched Land Development Company. He
graduated with honors in Business
Management from Sinclair College in Dayton, Ohio. He worked
for 16 years at the Hobart Corporation Headquarters where he
held numerous positions including national retail sales manager for
the U.S. He also served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Lewis has been active in The Shoals, having held positions as
chairman of the Shoals Chamber of Commerce, a Board member of the
Shoals Economic Development Authority, chairman of the Florence
Civil Service Board, a Board member of Florence Rotary, and a member
of the Florence Zoning Board.
Alex Nelson, Jr. was appointed by Lauderdale County to
serve on
the
Board until September 30, 2008. Mr. Nelson is president of
Nelson Service Group, having worked for the contracting firm since
1973. He was born in Florence, where he graduated from Coffee High
School (1968) and Florence State University
(University of North Alabama) (1973). He served in the U.S.
Army Reserve (883rd Quartermaster Airborne Unit) from 1968 until his
honorable discharge in 1973. |

Mr. Nelson has actively supported The Shoals
as a trustee on the UNA Board of Trustees (Emeritus) from 1980 through 1996,
a member of the Shoals Chamber of Commerce, and in the Florence Rotary Club.
David Thorn was appointed by Colbert County to serve on
the Board until September 30, 2009. Mr. Thorn is the owner of
TruloveStyle--Cherokee Furniture Gallery and Lake, Lodge, & Home--Rustic
Furniture
in
Cherokee, Alabama, where he has lived for the past nine years. He grew
up in Cherokee, attended the University of North Alabama, and graduated from
Auburn University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked
for 20 years in the energy industry with Schlumberger, exploring for oil
and gas in the United States, South America, and Australia.
The SEDA Board of Directors consists of 24
members appointed by local governments in The Shoals. For a full list

University of North Alabama Students to Intern
at SEDA |
Two
University of North Alabama (UNA)
students, Stefanie Haeffele and Yuta Fukuda, will intern at SEDA for the
spring of 2007.
Stefanie Haeffele is a senior completing her major in
economics and finance. She will work on a special project at SEDA to study the impact of
specific industry on the economy of The Shoals. Ms. Haeffele recently
presented an economics research paper at the Society of Business, Industry,
and Economics annual conference. She is also working as an assistant
editor for the Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics.
Ms. Haeffele is president of the
UNA Habitat
for Humanity Campus Chapter.
Yuta Fukuda is a senior
majoring in marketing and CIS with a minor in Spanish. He will assist SEDA staff in the development of SEDA's new
Web site and in various
information management and marketing activities. Mr. Fukuda is from
Takasaki,
Japan, and attends UNA through the
international student program.
He is well-known to many in The Shoals thanks to his role as placekicker
for the UNA Lions football team. He was honored as an Academic All-Gulf South Conference
selection for maintaining at least a 3.2 GPA.

AAMA Quarterly Meeting, February 7-8 |
The Alabama Automotive
Manufacturers Association (AAMA) will hold its quarterly meeting on February 7-8 at
the
Arthur R. Outlaw
Mobile Convention Center in Mobile.

"Partners-In-Education" Golf
Tournament |

SCA Tissue,
Vulcan Materials
Company, Buffalo
Rock/Pepsi, and
TVA will
host their 5th Annual Partners-In-Education Golf
Tournament to benefit local schools. The tournament
will be held on Friday, June 8, 2007, at the Robert Trent Jones
Golf Trail @ The Shoals. The event will be a four-man
scramble and will be played on the Schoolmaster course.
This is a fundraising tournament to raise money to
support Cherokee Elementary, Middle, and High Schools; R.E.
Thompson; New Bethel Elementary School; and, Russellville
Elementary School. A portion of the proceeds will also
be donated to the Sheffield Education Foundation.
There are several corporate sponsorship levels:
Platinum--$4000; Gold--$2000; Silver--$1000; and,
Bronze--$500. Each company's name and/or logo will be
displayed at the tournament, along with recognition of the
sponsorship to all of the participating schools. Each
individual participant will be served a complimentary lunch,
receive a goodie bag, and have a chance to win a golf
weekend package for four people to The Moor's Golf and
Racquet Club, which is the home of the former PGA Senior
Tour in Milton, Florida. Platinum sponsors will
automatically receive this golf weekend package gift
certificate. Other prizes at the tournament include
cash prizes, door prizes, and a hole-in-one prize (a new
car!).
