North American Lighting Groundbreaking Ceremony
The Shoals Economic Development Authority (SEDA), with the City of Muscle Shoals, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the North American Lighting (NAL) building site in the new Shoals Research Airpark on July 21, 2006.  The event brought together a large group of individuals and agencies who played key roles in bringing the NAL project to The Shoals.
Forrest Wright, Executive Director of SEDA, welcomed NAL Chairman/CEO Noriaki Yonezawa, NAL President/COO Daniel Robusto, U.S. Congressman Bud Cramer, Governor Bob Riley, a host of state and local officials, and numerous others to this special occasion.

NAL Chairman Noriaki Yonezawa Addresses the Crowd

Mayor David Bradford of Muscle Shoals thanked everyone present who had a share in making this project a reality.  He noted that without the efforts of Governor Riley and Congressman Cramer; the Colbert and Lauderdale County Commissions; the mayors and city councils of Sheffield, Tuscumbia, Muscle Shoals, and Florence; SEDA; the Alabama Development Office; and many others, this project would not have been possible.
Governor Bob Riley had high praise for Mayor Bradford, calling him "one of the best  mayors in the state."  He also had good things to say about the work of Forrest Wright for the economic development of The Shoals.  Governor Riley spoke of his high hopes for the new Shoals Research Airpark, noting that NAL's commitment to The Shoals should lead the way for future attraction of companies to the area.  With the federal and state grants received due to the NAL project, the development of the infrastructure of the park will make it an outstanding location for attracting new companies.
One of the driving forces behind the selection of Muscle Shoals for the new NAL facility, NAL President/COO Dan Robusto, spoke about the challenges involved in making the decision to come to The Shoals.  After looking at sites in quite a few states, NAL had narrowed their choices down to two sites, the Muscle Shoals site and one in a different state, when the site selection process began to get more difficult.  A critical call from Governor Riley directly to Mr. Robusto made the difference--Muscle Shoals would be the new home for NAL!  Not to be overlooked were Congressman Cramer and Forrest Wright.  Mr. Robusto was impressed by the diligence of Congressman Cramer in helping to work through difficult issues that came up in the process.  Using an automotive industry analogy, he said that Forrest Wright is "where the rubber meets the road."  Mr. Robusto presented a check to Mayor Bradford on behalf of NAL as a contribution to the community for the third annual Muscle Shoals Music CityFest.
Following Mr. Robusto, NAL Chairman/CEO Noriaki Yonezawa echoed his appreciation for all of the support of those who came to the groundbreaking ceremony.  He noted that the Alabama Industrial Development Training program was an important factor in selecting Muscle Shoals.  He drew a big round of applause when he donned his new City of Muscle Shoals ball cap.
Forrest Wright then introduced Congressman Bud Cramer to speak, noting that Congressman Cramer is that special congressman who calls you and asks what needs to be done rather than waiting for you to call him.  Congressman Cramer praised the close cooperation of the city, county, and state officials in working to attract NAL to North Alabama.  He noted that times have changed and the site selection process has become much more competitive.  Without the combined efforts of all who worked on this project, it would not have resulted in the successful outcome we have today.

Senator Bobby Denton and Liz Anderson, Chair of the SEDA Board of Directors, rounded out the ceremony.  Senator Denton spoke on behalf of Senator Roger Bedford, Representative Marcel Black, Representative Tammy Irons, and Representative Lynn Greer.  Liz Anderson thanked both the SEDA Board and SEDA Staff for their diligent work on this project.
Finally, the shovels came out and the ceremonial groundbreaking took place to cap off a memorable event for all!

Due to the complexity of this project, it's impossible to list everyone individually who touched it -- we would inevitably miss someone. Therefore, the Shoals Economic Development Authority Board of Directors and Staff would like to thank everyone who participated in bringing North American Lighting to The Shoals. This successful site location is a great example of a true partnership of many individuals and agencies working together. Thanks!

State Launches Online Directory of High-Tech Companies in  Alabama
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs has launched an easy one-stop source for finding high tech companies in the state with the new High Tech Directory Web site at www.hightechdirectory.alabama.gov.  The directory lists more than 175 businesses from around the state in several industries, including aerospace, automotive, biotechnology, electronics, and information technology.  It serves as a recruitment tool for other high-tech industries and enables existing Alabama companies who might have been unfamiliar with one another to work together.
"This directory documents the wealth of high tech companies in Alabama," Governor Bob Riley said.  "It will be a valuable tool to attract more business to Alabama, which will further strengthen and diversify our economy."
The directory is searchable by county, region, or category.  Each listing includes the company name and location, contact information, Web site address, number of employees, and a description of the products or services offered.  Because the directory is Internet-based, it is never out of date.  Companies can update, add, or delete their information at any time, simply by using the password issued to them.
Companies who do business in high-tech industries and are not currently listed in the directory may submit their information through the "submit/update company info" section of the Web site.  ADECA will maintain the directory site, which was developed by the University of Alabama in Huntsville.  The site's development was funded by a grant to the university by Governor Riley.
