Mauldin to Chair SEDA Board
The Shoals Economic Development Authority announced at its October 10, 2006 board meeting that Macke Mauldin will serve as the SEDA Chair for the 2007 fiscal year.  As one of his first official acts as SEDA Chair, Mauldin presented outgoing chair, Liz Anderson, with an honorary plaque to thank her for her exemplary work over the past year.
Now that The Shoals is enjoying historically low unemployment rates, Mauldin sees underemployment as the newest challenge on the horizon for SEDA:  "We need to work toward getting jobs that will employ people to their full capabilities."
In addition to naming Mauldin as SEDA Chair, the SEDA Board also named Roy Rudolph as vice president and Jack Johnson as treasurer for the coming fiscal year.

Brownfields Rule Takes Effect
Effective November 1, 2006, the Environmental Protection Agency put into effect a ruling, All Appropriate Inquiries Final Rule, that establishes specific requirements for conducting all appropriate inquiries into the previous ownership, uses, and environmental conditions of a property for the purpose of qualifying for certain landowner liability protections under CERCLA.  All appropriate inquiries must be conducted in compliance with either the All Appropriate Inquiries Final Rule or the ASTM E1527-05 Phase I Environmental Site Assessment Process to obtain protection from potential liability under CERCLA as an innocent landowner, a contiguous property owner, or a bona fide prospective purchaser.

R.G. Darby Expands in Florence-Lauderdale Industrial Park

On September 19, 2006, R.G. Darby Company, Inc. welcomed a large group to publicly announce the completion of its 50,000-square-foot warehouse addition in the Florence-Lauderdale Industrial Park.  Cliff Darby, president of R.G. Darby Company, Inc., said, "We would like to thank Mayor Bobby Irons, the Florence Industrial Development Board, Carbine Construction Company, and the Shoals Economic Development Authority for their role in making this expansion a success."  He also thanked Bank Independent for their financial backing and Carbine Construction for finishing the building earlier than promised.
Darby was founded in 1983 targeting the multi-family housing market.  In 1985, the company built a 28,000-square-foot facility at its current location on Kendall Drive.  This facility now exceeds 140,000 square feet.  Darby pre-hangs doors and sells windows, moldings, builders' hardware, and specialties to the multi-family, condo, and assisted living markets.  Over the years, Darby has grown with its customers due to its knowledge, outstanding service, and the quality of its 100 employees.
A number of local officials were on hand to express their appreciation and support to the company:
"We are very grateful to R.G. Darby Company for their past investment in our community and are excited about their building addition of 50,000 square feet and the new jobs this will generate.  Our existing industries continue to create new jobs, which is vital to the overall economy of the Shoals area."--Bobby Irons, Mayor, City of Florence

"We are excited by R.G. Darby's expression of confidence in the industrial park and the opportunity they have to expand on a long and successful operation.  We appreciate their financial commitment to our area and look forward to working with them to make sure they continue to succeed in the future."--Judge Dewey Mitchell, Chairman, Lauderdale County Commission
Likewise, Angie Pickens, Florence City Council (District 6), expressed her thanks to the company for its investment in our area and invited Mr. Darby to call her with any needs or concerns.  She pledged to work through whatever issues he faces as the company moves forward.
SEDA congratulates Cliff Darby and the R.G. Darby Company on their latest expansion!

SEDA Hosts 11th Annual Golf Tournament
The Shoals Economic Development Authority hosted its 11th Annual Shoals Industry Classic Golf Tournament on October 2, 2006, at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail @ The Shoals.  The tournament recognizes the importance of existing industry to The Shoals economy by bringing together representatives from industry, special guests, and sponsors for a day of great golf and camaraderie.  All 135 golfers enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people, make new business contacts, and play golf on one of the nicest golf courses in the state.  This tournament has become an enduring tradition for SEDA to thank those who do so much to make The Shoals a great place to do business and a great place to live!
