SCA Tissue Named "Vendor of the Year"
International Dairy Queen, Inc. presented SCA Tissue North America with its "Vendor of the Year Award" for being the top vendor to the Dairy Queen system.  SCA Tissue, the sole napkin vendor to Dairy Queen, won the award from among more than 100 vendors.
"This award is a tremendous acknowledgement of how SCA is living out our goals of getting closer to our customers," said SCA Tissue President & CEO, Joe Raccuia.  "This honor shows that we are dedicated to providing not only high-quality products, but outstanding service as well."
Dairy Queen Purchasing Manager, Nick Davis, expressed his appreciation for SCA Tissue's quality products and service:  "SCA Tissue has shown itself to be a solid vendor partner by consistently keeping the interests of the franchisees first and foremost in their actions and decisions.  They have provided us consistent product seamlessly and ethically.  SCA went from supplying 30 percent of our napkins to 100 percent and the results have been very impressive.  Not only did they bring us significant savings, the program was instituted without a single hitch.  There was not one problem reported."
SCA Tissue North America is a major supplier of Away-From-Home tissue products, with brand names including Tork
® and Xpressnap®.  The parent company, SCA, is a $13 billion international paper company that employs some 53,000 people in 50 countries.  SCA Tissue operates a tissue plant in the Barton Riverfront Industrial Park in The Shoals.
Tribute to Shoals Leaders
SEDA will miss the enthusiasm and warm-heartedness of both Robert (Bob) Downie and Bill Lucas, two members of the SEDA Board of Directors who died in recent months.
Mr. Downie had a long history in manufacturing in The Shoals, dating back to 1969.  He retired as plant manager of Southern Reclamation Co. in 1996.
After his retirement, Mr. Downie actively supported The Shoals community, serving not only on the SEDA Board, but also as president of the Shoals Manufacturers Association, president of the Northwest-Shoals Community College Foundation Board of Directors, and a member of the Florence Rotary Club.
Bill Lucas gave a great deal to The Shoals area as well.  After moving to Florence in 1998 to serve as president of the northwest region of Colonial Bank, Bill took an active role in economic development.  He served on the SEDA Board of Directors for seven years.  Bill also served as a board member of Northwest-Shoals Community College Foundation, in the president's cabinet of the University of North Alabama, and as vice chairman of the Shoals Area Chamber of Commerce.
Both Bill Lucas and Bob Downie willingly gave of their time and energy to help improve the lives of all of the citizens who call The Shoals home.  SEDA and The Shoals were fortunate to have had Bob and Bill to move our community forward.  They will be missed by all.

Firestone Building Products Acquires GenFlex Building Products

Firestone Building Products, a division of BFS Diversified Products, LLC, has acquired the GenFlex Building Products unit from OMNOVA Solutions, Inc.  The transaction includes the GenFlex manufacturing facility in Tuscumbia, Alabama, an office in Maumee, Ohio, and a product distribution center in Columbus, Ohio.  GenFlex Building Products will operate as an independent business unit called GenFlex Roofing Systems.
Mike Gorey, president of Firestone and chairman, CEO, and president of BFS Diversified Products, LLC, said:  "Acquiring GenFlex Building Products is a strong complement to our brand portfolio, and it is consistent with our strategic plan to expand the markets we serve.  We expect to leverage our commercial roofing expertise and provide top quality, innovative products and services that fully develop the strong potential of each of our brands."
Wayne Hunter, vice president of operations for Firestone, sees the move as a win-win situation for Firestone and GenFlex customers.  He said, "GenFlex's nationwide network of distributors and contractors will allow Firestone to further enhance its manufacturing efficiency by reaching a larger audience, while GenFlex customers can expect higher levels of customer service and broader product offerings."

Shoals Manufacturers Association Annual Dinner

The Shoals Manufacturers Association (SMA) held its annual dinner on November 9 at Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club.  Members of the SMA, as well as invited guests, enjoyed the opportunity to strengthen the close ties between the public and private sectors of the community.
The SMA, with support from the Shoals Economic Development Authority, fosters a working relationship among Shoals area manufacturers and promotes a healthy business climate, encouraging existing companies to expand and/or remain in The Shoals.  SMA meetings are held bi-monthly and provide a format of speakers, roundtable discussions, and forums to consider topics important to the membership as a whole.
Shoals area manufacturers with ten or more employees are eligible to join the SMA.  For more information, contact Lesley Cox at 764-0351.

Shoals Training Alliance Provides Training for Local Industry
The Shoals Training Alliance continues to assist local industry in obtaining training at a reasonable cost.  The Alliance organized two training classes during November.
One class, Forklift:  Train the Trainer, was held on November 9 at Northwest Shoals Community College and gave employees of local companies the opportunity to learn basic operation concepts, general safety principles, situational awareness, hazard recognition and compliance with OSHA regulations.
Another class, PLC Basics, is continuing through the first week of December.  Topics covered in this class, which is designed for maintenance personnel, include: types of PLC inputs and outputs--creating a simple logic program; creating a new project; wiring diagrams versus line diagrams--electrical versus logic flow; logic functions; setup communication and downloading I/O configuration; installing and connecting the PLC; PLC simulation CD overview; start and stop control--batch mixer simulation; OTE, XIC and XIO instructions--U/D counter instructions; TON and TOF timer instructions; compare instructions--math instructions
; count and compare--limit compare, mask compare; status indicators; clearing a fault; moving a project between processors; sequencer instructions; bit shift instructions; using the force instruction.
The Shoals Industry Education Alliance, often referred to as the Shoals Training Alliance, was created in 1996 by SEDA in conjunction with Shoals area manufacturers, Alabama Industrial Development Training, Northwest-Shoals Community College, Shoals secondary technology centers (Burrell Slater Center for Technology, Allen Thornton Technical Center, Muscle Shoals Center for Technology), and Shoals Area/Tri-County Adult Education.  Classes began in January 1997 by assisting companies in meeting their training needs.  By identifying similar training needs among several companies, the Training Alliance has scheduled training courses at an affordable cost to the companies.  The Shoals Training Alliance was the first in the State of Alabama and is now being used as a model for other training alliances throughout the state.

The Shoals Training Alliance meets quarterly to discuss ongoing needs for training.  For more information, please contact Lesley Cox at (256) 764-0351.
