The Shoals Wins CEDA Award from the Southern Economic Development Council

The Shoals area of Northwest Alabama has won a prestigious award from the Southern Economic Development Council (SEDC).  The SEDC Community Economic Development Award (CEDA) recognizes the Shoals Economic Development Authority and the governments serving Colbert and Lauderdale Counties for their success in recruiting new businesses, retention of existing companies, and effectively branding The Shoals area.
"The CEDA program is a new initiative by SEDC to recognize outstanding communities in our region for their efforts in advancing the economic viability of their community through economic and community development programs," said Tucson Roberts, SEDC chairman.
The CEDA awards are not just to honor communities, though.  One key purpose is to learn of the successes that certain communities are having and utilize what works in order to assist other communities in the region.  "This recognition program is allowing SEDC to promote successful, results-proven programs that can be shared with other communities," said Gene Stinson, SEDC president.  Thus, the entire Southeast will have a better opportunity to continue to grow and prosper economically.
The SEDC, with over 900 members from 17 states across the Southeastern United States, is the largest and oldest regional and economic development organization in North America, dating back to 1946.  The CEDA awards continue the mission of the SEDC, which is, in part, to "provide dynamic leadership to economic development practitioners across the American South."

The Shoals Chosen for TVA Valley TaP Program
The Shoals has been selected as one of three communities in the seven-state Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) region to participate in TVA's Valley Targeted and Prepared Community Program (The Valley TaP Program).  The program is designed to assist communities through a strategic planning process administered by Boyette Levy, an Atlanta consulting firm specializing in economic development, public policy, and communications strategy.
The Shoals Economic Development Authority (SEDA) led the community effort to apply for selection as a targeted community.  The SEDA Board of Directors passed a resolution at its September 11, 2007, Board meeting giving its full support to the selection of SEDA and The Shoals as a benefactor of The Valley TaP Program.  Additionally, the entire Shoals community threw its energy behind the effort with 27 letters of support from business, government, media, and education leaders offered.
The program will involve an in-depth analysis of The Shoals' strengths and weaknesses, identification of its core competencies, a leadership audit, and an assessment of the existing economic development structure.  From this analysis, The Shoals should gain greater insight into which industries it should target, including a list of ten target companies.  This program should thus be of great benefit to The Shoals.
"The Valley Tap Program planning process gives communities the tools they need to enhance their competitiveness for new jobs and investment," said Del Boyette of Boyette Levy.  "The communities selected to participate in this year's program have already demonstrated strong local leadership and a sound commitment to supporting economic and community development efforts."
This is the second year that TVA's Economic Development program has offered this program to assist communities in the Tennessee Valley region.  After a well-received initial program last year,
John Bradley, TVA's senior vice president of economic development, is optimistic about the results of this year's program.  "Valley communities that completed the planning process offered by The Valley TaP Program during the first year of the program were very pleased with the assistance provided.  We believe this new round of communities also will enjoy great benefits for their economic development efforts."

Shoals Manufacturers Association Annual Dinner

The Shoals Manufacturers Association (SMA) held its annual dinner on November 15 at Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club.  Members of the SMA, as well as invited guests, enjoyed the opportunity to strengthen the close ties between the public and private sectors of the community.
The SMA, with support from the Shoals Economic Development Authority, fosters a working relationship among Shoals area manufacturers and promotes a healthy business climate, encouraging existing companies to expand and/or remain in The Shoals.  SMA meetings are held bi-monthly and provide a format of speakers, roundtable discussions, and forums to consider topics important to the membership as a whole.
Shoals area manufacturers with ten or more employees are eligible to join the SMA.  For more information, contact Lesley Cox at (256) 764-0351.

National Alabama Corporation Update
National Alabama Corporation's project to construct and operate a railcar manufacturing facility in The Shoals continues on target.
The site clearing and preparation for construction of the facility is rapidly moving ahead.  Over half of the 1.3 million cubic yards of soil has been moved to date.  A significant portion of the building footprint is being prepared with crushed stone for the foundations and footings, which are under construction.  Currently, upwards of 200 construction workers are on site.
In addition to the construction of the facility, preparations for the first training classes for the project are underway.  National Alabama Corporation and Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT) have established an office at 737 E. Avalon Ave. in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.  Advertisements for AIDT training for positions as manufacturing associates, cell leaders and maintenance technicians began running in the TimesDaily in early November, with an excellent response thus far.
Persons interested in applying for AIDT training for the National Alabama Corporation facility may apply at https://jobs.aidt.edu/nac/.
